The History of Pole Green Church

Pole Green Church of Christ was started by the Gethsemane Church of Christ in 1904 due to the fact that there was no Church of Christ in this vicinity. The church building was dedicated on October 17, 1904. Contributions to pay for the structure were given by individuals who were asked by the preacher, "How much will you give?" The gifts ranged from $5.00 to $25.00 from the different individuals which back then was a lot of money.

The following is a list of those who were Charter Members of Pole Green:

  • Mr. George Martin and wife, Amanda
  • Mr. W.H. Didlake and his wife, Fannie
  • Mr. Ettison Martin and wife, Christiana
  • Mr. Harvey Pitts
  • Mr. Curry Pitts
  • Mr. Bagby Pitts
  • Mr. Willie Meredith
  • Mr. Walter Tate and wife, Ellen
  • Mr. W.C. Heath and wife, Rosa Bell (Mr. Heath was superintendent and song leader for a number of years)
  • Mr. W.F. Heath and wife, Cora Lee
  • Mr. P.H. Heath
  • Mr. Nat Heath
  • Mr. John Heath
  • Mr. Ed Martin and wife, Manie
  • Mr. W.P. Waters
  • Mr. Westley Goode
  • Mr. William Hicks
  • Mr. H.L. Grubbs and wife, Ida

In 1929, a violent thunderstorm, with heavy winds, twisted the building from its foundation. A group of men went to Fulton on Darbytown Road, just below Richmond to get bricks. It took a full day for this trip. The church building was then lifted with jacks, and the new foundation put under it.

During the ministry of Mr. McKinney, the classrooms were constructed on each side of the building. This work was done in the early 30's.

On January 18, 1950, during the ministry of Mr. Harry Swain, the parsonage was constructed.

In the late 1950's a basement and six upstairs classrooms and bathrooms were added.  In 1977, the new educational wing, which contained offices, classrooms, nursery and bathrooms was built.

We worked on a Building program for over 8 years. It had been decided that the church would raise half of the money for the new building prior to starting construction.

In May, 1993, the old parsonage was torn down.  Construction for the new adjoining building was started in the Fall, of 1995 and was completed in 1997. September 7, 1997 was the first Sunday we worshipped in the new building. The new building contained a new sanctuary that would seat 350, offices and bathrooms. In 1998, the basement was finished and it contained  five classrooms and a large fellowship hall, and large bathrooms.

Up to the present day, there have been 23 ministers who have served the Pole Green Church of Christ since its beginning.

God has greatly blessed our congregation by outgrowing our facilities and placing numerous subdivisions all around us. Therefore, we must proceed in faith, realizing that Christ has a vision for us to reach the world for Christ and to teach His Word without error. Jesus tells us: "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." (Matthew 5:14)  Our light will continue to shine for Christ in Mechanicsville, Virginia.
